The Teams

It is with great pleasure that we are announcing that this year's International Polo Match will between Wales and Ireland.

The Irish Team will include Steve Collins the Former WBO World Middle Weight and Super Middle Weight Champion. This years supported charity for the Polo and the Estate is The Noah's Ark Appeal (Childrens Hospital of Wales) where Serena Legge-Bourke (aged 3) spent her first 6 months and it was there that life saving surgery was performed by the team. She is 100% now all thanks to the team at the Childrens Hospital.

 

Ireland

 

Colm Purcell

 
 

Handicap -1
Colm started to play Polo in March '09. Colm only played 3 times in 2010 due to injury but he is back this year determined to make up for lost Polo time. Colm plays Polo in Waterford Polo Club and Curraghmore Polo Club.

 

Steve Collins

 
 

Handicap 0
Started riding at the age of 12 and was riding out racehorses at 14. Steve hunts in Ireland and the U.K. His new passion is Polo which he plays with the same determination as he did when he became a World Boxing Champion.

Steve is deeply involved in St. Albans Polo Club where he is Chairman.

 

Niall Donnelly

 
 

Handicap 3
Niall is based in Guildford in Surrey where he has his own Polo yard with his wife Claire. He has an extensive young horse programme. Niall has played all over the world and spends his winters playing in Melbourne, Australia.

Niall plays in Cowdray Park Polo Club in Midhurst.

 

Guy Higginson

 
 

Handicap 4
Guy is based in Christchurch, New Zeland on his family farm where he has a very successful young horse programme.

Guy plays professionally in both New Zeland and Australia.

Guy and his family also make the famous "Higginson" Polo Saddles. Guy is based this year in England and is playing in Cowdray Park Polo Club.

 

Wales

 

Ricky Cooper

 
 

Handicap -1
has spent the past 3 years stationed in New York and is in his 2nd season with the Havalind Hollow Polo Club.  Prior to the Ricky spent a great deal of his polo career in the Berkshire area playing out of Fifield, Ham and Ascot Park Polo Clubs.  Ricky has held the prestigious position of captaining the first Welsh Polo team in over 100 years for the past 3 seasons, a position that considers his greatest honor.  Since playing in last season’s games Ricky has completed his 7th and 8th Marathons respectively in New York and London and is a former Great Britain Ice/Roller Hockey representative in numerous World and European championships.

Ricky Comments “Once again it is a true pleasure for the team to return to the Glanusk Estate to represent the country.  We aim to produce a great game along with our Celtic friends from across the Irish Sea and would like to thank the Legge-Bourke family for their continued support for the game of polo”.

 

Stuart Leigh-Davies

Originally from Carmarthenshire, West Wales, Stuart began playing polo in 2004 and now lives in Windsor where he is a member of nearby Blueys Polo Club.

Coached by former England International and High Goal professional Mat Lodder, this will be Stuart's sixth appearance for Wales. He has also played for the Royal Air Force during his service as a reservist officer and for the University of London.

Roddy Matthews

Roddy Matthews is a Veteran of the English High Goal Polo circuit.  He started playing at the age of 12 and reached a 5 Goal handicap and represented England at Cartier in 1990, and was victorious over a visiting French team.

Playing out of Guards Polo Club and Cowdray Park Polo Club this season, Roddy mixes his professional playing commitments with High Goal umpiring and training and producing top level polo ponies.  Roddy played several times for the Wales Polo Team in 2010 and has become the lynch pin of the teams open and attacking play.
